January may be a bleak month for most of us – does the term post-Christmas slump mean anything to you? – but worry no more, fellow sufferers. The 2011 Award Season is upon us! Think miles of red carpet, glitz, glamour, dream-gowns and frock-horrors; feeling better already? We thought so.
Now, the official season does not really start until this Sunday with the first biggie, the Golden Globes, but last night’s Palm Springs Film Festival Awards was a very nice introduction to the who-wore-what (or ‘whom’ for our friends across the pond) craze that’s about to hit us all. Two stars are set to monopolize the red carpet in the next few weeks and that’s Natalie Portman, for Black Swan, and Carey Mulligan, for Never Let Me Go. Both were at Palm Springs last night and went home – or to their lovely, we’re sure, hotel suites – with an award each, but let’s focus on what they chose to kick-start their award-marathon with, shall we?
Natalie, who arrived with her fiancé Benjamin Millepied, chose Vionnet. She’s widely expected to alternate between her favourite Rodarte, who also designed her ballerina costumes for Black Swan, and Dior, for whom she recently filmed a perfume ad, for the main ceremonies but for last night’s more low-key affair she opted for the Parisian label. The black short column dress from the French label’s latest collection, features a cute and sparkly beaded collar and cuffs and contrasting diaphanous long sleeves and combined with her sleek side-swept chignon she looked her usual chic and sweet self but was the overall look ever so slightly overwhelming for the petite actress? Your thoughts, as always, in the comments below please. Natalie also posed for the cameras alongside what can only be considered a woman’s best accessory, Jake Gyllenhaal who presented her with her award and, as an old friend and rumoured ex, sang her praises and cheekily teased her. ‘Natalie is the Audrey Hepburn of our generation,’ he told the audience, ‘ she is elegant, graceful, has amazing eyebrows, is talented, really short, funny, smart, dedicated, incredibly kind.’ And if that wasn’t enough he went on, ‘She's a vegan, which makes it really frustrating when you're picking a place to eat and she's also recently announced that she's going to be a mom, and her child will probably need therapy after seeing Black Swan!’ We also got a closer look at her engagement ring and it's as sparkly and fantastic as we expected.
Carey Mulligan also got to pose for a pic with Jake G (shouldn’t it become a rule that all winning ladies pose with him, making him the new Oscar statuette?) while looking equally lovely in a textured purple dress by her trusted Prada (she wore a charming Prada dress at last year’s Oscars), belted at the waist and teamed with simple black pumps. The dress seems to belong to the Milanese brand’s headline-making Mad Men-esque A/W’11 collection and it begs the question; is the British actress so enamoured with Prada she might repeat the label for this year’s round of awards too? In a funny designer-swap-game, Carey wore Vionnet at last year’s BAFTAs.
She’s also growing out her pixie crop, which makes us hope some fun hair accessories, a vintage clip or even a tiara! – might make an appearance in the next red carpet she walks.
Until then, so long!
