When Cathy Horyn, the fashion critic for the New York Times respected and feared within the fashion industry in equal measure, recounted her top fashion moments for 2010 last week, she surprised us all by positioning Style Rookie Tavi Gevinson’s appearance at the Dior couture show in the number one spot. This may have been for chronological reasons - the show took place in January after all - but the sheer fact that it kick-started a long and continuing debate on the future of blogging, print magazines and how tall exactly should a, back then, 13-year-old’s hat be in Paris, shows how times, they are a-changing!
The news then, that Tumblr, the image-focused blogging platform beloved by bloggers like Tavi, is sending 20 of its bloggers to next month’s New York Fashion Week – eek, it’s that time already – means one thing; the 2011 blogger debate is well and truly on! Tumblrs taking part so far include Jessica Quirk from What I Wore, Peace, Love, Chanel and SaraZucker.com. According to Tumblr’s fashion director Rich Tong, they’ll receive complimentary flights and accommodation and will be whisked off to lunches, dinners, and cocktails with brands and designers. Sounds like good fun, right?
We expect a cheering barrage of ‘I heart NY’ and ‘OMG, Kate Lanphear just walked past me, here’s what she’s wearing today’ and a lot of envy-inducing ‘look at these shoes’ pics so we’ll be keeping an eye on Tumblr.com/nyfw for a real-time feed. “I’ve never seen a community with such an appetite for content,” says Tong. “They just love looking at photos.” So are we and now we’ve had a moment to recover from the shock we simply can’t wait for Fashion Week! See you in New York, guys.
