Whether you’re a fully fledged elf, or an outright Scrooge (and there are both types within the fashion world. Believe us, just because you like shopping doesn’t mean you love Christmas) – you have to admit: ‘tis not the season to be tasteful. Horrible tinsel, all that red ribbony stuff and multi coloured baubles – yuck.
Which is why we found it very refreshing to take a gander round two of London’s sexiest fashion retailers this week – Machine A in Soho and Dover St Market in Mayfair. Machine A is hosting a Piers Atkinson pop up shop; Piers is the kinkiest milliner in town, who is at heavily influenced by all things spiky at the moment. They threw a teeny Christmas soiree the other night so all their fans could check out the shop windows (top picture) – not QUITE what the baby Jesus had in mind, but - hey, it makes a change from holly and ivy. They had also put together a short fashion film to showcase the hat collection. Very nice boys – and can you see their futuristic Christmas tree? Now THAT is what Grazia Daily is going to model our decs on this year. Funnily enough when we spoke to Piers, he described his flat (which houses two designers and a stylist) as 'very traditional, with a lovey tree. Ooh, and a Barbie pole-dancing at the top of it!'
LOVELY. Now off to Dover Street. We’ve personally never been to Japan at this time of year, but of course Rei Kawakubo of Comme Des Garcons is a woman with a strong vision. Therefore, Chirstmas at her designer emporium is heralded by the arrival of an enormous fibreglass elephant, made by the artist Stephanie Quayle and a range of polka dot products in navy and green – from rucksacks to stuffed pigs and teddies. Perfect. And not a jingly bell or plastic Santa in sight.
