Phoebe Philo, the British Creative Director of French luxury line Céline has beaten designers Christopher Kane and Erdem and to be crowned Designer of the Year! Hurrah! And not only that, she did it in a foxy strapless Celine catsuit, AND disco era style icon Bianca Jagger presented the award to her!

On winning the award, Phoebe said ‘It feels meaningful…I’m very lucky’

The award celebrates the designer who ‘has made a significant impact in the past year both in the UK and internationally.’ This seems like a hopeless understatement for the woman whose designs have dominated catwalk coverage and trend round-ups both seasons this year, with her first and second  (and resort!) collections for a revamped Céline.

Phoebe was at another French heritage brand – Chloe, during some of its most successful years (remember the Paddington bag?) first as Stella McCartney’s right hand woman, then after her departure in 2001, as Creative Director.

In 2006 she left voluntarily to look after her young family, feeling worn out from commuting between London (home) and Paris (Chloe) to the sound of a collective sigh of disappointment from all the fashion editors as they all used to wear lots of Phobe's designs.  The announcement of her return to the international catwalks, as head designer for Céline was brilliant news. It was quite a coup for owners LMVH, who had to resort to building a studio in London specifically for Phoebe, in order to woo her to the company.

More recently, Phoebe has supplemented her wildly successful Céline collections with a capsule range of 5 ‘Perfect’ trouser shapes and was named the second most creative person in fashion by Business of Fashion/Industrie magazine.

We asked Ms Philo if she might ever show here, and she answered ‘I’d love to do something in London.’
