Dannii in bloom, Cheryl in origami Couture: it's The X Factor Fash-Off!

06 December 2010

Oh Dannii Minogue, WOW. You just took our breath away. Once again, the Aussie judge chose a design from her homeland for Saturday’s installment of The X Factor, but this time, it’s a gown from Aurelio Costarella’s S/S ’10 collection that we were treated to.

Quite frankly, everything about this floaty dress pleases us. The waftiness is dreamy, the nude hue is divine, the lace inserts are saucy-yet-sweet, and that corsage? Blooming per-FECT-ion. So after wearing a Halston number last week and now sporting this Carrie-esque frou frou, has Sarah Jessica Parker become Dannii’s new muse? Just when we thought we couldn’t possibly love her more…

As for Cheryl Cole, is that a pile of paper napkins she’s been gift wrapped in? Did her stylist get origami-happy with the loo roll? No, don’t be silly! This is in fact a nifty A/W ’08 Couture creation from Chezza’s longtime designer pal, Stéphane Rolland. So that explains all the sculpturalness! How could we forget when she transformed into a Ferrero Rocher at the hands of Monsieur Rolland last series? (this pink bit will jog your memory). Exactly. But what we find unsettling with Cheryl’s version of the frock is this: the ingenious and dramatic sharpness seen on the catwalk has been somewhat…flattened. Is this a good or a bad thing? We haven't decided yet.

So we fast forward to Sunday night when Dannii gave us another dose of the underwear as outwear trend in a Dolce meets Berardi extravaganza. As you well know, Grazia Daily is partial to the curve-enhancing Fifties silhouette and when served with some sheer black lace and, well, not much else, it doesn’t get any better than this. And what a classy way to flash those slender stems, eh? So yes, Dannii is still on fine fashion form.

Meanwhile, Cheryl also went the leggy yet classy route by surrounding her pins with a flowing train for some eveningwear elegance, fitting for the semi-final showdown. The mullet design is the perfect combo of her usual sassy-and-short style mixed with the benefits of a glamourous gown, and we’re loving the up ‘do for a touch of sophistication.

But which lady wins your vote? Who should be crowned this week’s fash-off winner? Have your say below...
