A rather large helping of snow may have brought the country to a standstill today but that does not mean glamour goes out the window, girls! In fact, we’ve recently noticed a red carpet trend emerging, sent from the fashion gods to save us from our snow-weather eveningwear dilemmas. Hurrah! Step forward The Trouser Suit.
Unpredictable and quirky, yet brilliantly practical, there’s nothing like some good tailoring to make a style statement when the chill sets in. Think Marlene Dietrich and Diane Keaton – just be sure not to wear a back to front suit à la Celine Dion, please. So take a look at this week’s suited and booted stars and start memorising their tailoring tips...
It all started when Leighton Meester arrived at the Gotham Awards in NYC on Monday night. Rather than wowing the crowd in a whooshy ballgown or another wacktacular jumpsuit, the Gossip Girl, who’s known for pushing the fashwan envelope, wore a subtle and chic trouser suit. Wowee. And get this - instead of choosing an androgynous design, Leighton went the whole hog by sporting a suit from menswear brand, Thom Browne (although we have an inkling those peg-legged trousers may have been tweaked to fit her teeny pins). But, a bonus point is awarded for adding a subtle dash of femininity thanks to that colour pop clutch and a pair of beetroot-hued Salvatore Ferragamo heels. So, ladies, this is how to work a tux, laid back stylee - just remember to keep one hand tucked in your pocket for a nonchalant appeal. How proud Chuck Bass would be!
Next up, is that you, Prince? No no, dears, it’s Halle Berry. The stunning actress was next in line to give the trend a try at Tuesday’s 'Frankie and Alice' premiere. All that metallic brocade provides a jazzy, La Roux-like finish, which Halle pulls off with aplomb (we think)... Admittedly, it is verging on Tin Man territory and that swirly pattern is reminiscent of our Christmas wrapping paper but this, friends, is Balmain, where nothing but sheer opulence will do. So deal, ok?
Oh look, it’s Winona Ryder showing us how to work a tuxedo suit with a gothic twist. Layers of black on black, a buttoned-up blouse and a diamond pendant – and, er, is that a bible she’s holding? Seriously, is Wino angling for a role as a lady vicar? Or perhaps she’s just channeling Funeral Director chic? Whatever the reason, we reckon this Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci ensemble is perfect for the premiere of highly anticipated psychological horror, 'Black Swan'. All she needs now is Karl Lagerfeld-esque gloves and glasses, dontcha think?
And there’s more! Olivia Wilde was trotting around the Tokyo premiere of 'TRON: Legacy' looking sharp in that classic waiter way. But what’s really impressive with this one is how Olivia’s kept it interesting with a mixture of textures, from those shiny cigarette pants to the matte tux. And just like Meester, she’s accessorised with loosely tousled tresses and some mega heels. We are blind with small-part jealousy, and big-part admiration. So with FOUR A-list sightings by Wednesday morning, Grazia HQ officially declared a trend was a-foot.
But it was last night’s occurrence that really sealed the deal. Jessica Alba decided to go shirtless at the Footwear Awards for a Victoria Beckham-esque saucy-but-powerful power suit. With that beautiful bouffant and those pointy Christian Louboutin Pigalle pumps topping off her Dolce and Gabbana stunner, doesn’t she look super sleek? That’s a resounding yes, then. An ivory Louboutin Loulou clutch is the ideal finishing touch to the elegant outfit. Bravo!
