The 2011 Pirelli calendar, the calendar that absolutely wrote the book on high production pictures of beautiful ladies in their pants, is out now! In tune with its slightly fashy makeover of late, the photographer commissioned to update the brand to 2011 standards is: everyone’s favourite Teutonic, be-ponytailed, fan-wafting Kaiser figure – Karl Lagerfeld!
Karl has chosen a theme, ‘Mythology’ and shot the model of each month in an appropriately ancient Greeky costume. We think the results are extremely arty, and may even disappoint some garage employees as the pics are rather flattering and softening in the style of Annie Leibowitz for Vanity Fair rather than oozing cleavage and eye-twinkles. Daria Werbowy is Artemis, with a bow and arrow, Chanel muse Elisa Sedanoui poses as Flora, while woman-of-the-moment (maybe Karl had to write to Tom Ford to ask if he could borrow her for the day) Julianne Moore is Hera, another Greek Goddess, also known as wife of Zeus.
Only one thing we were wondering . . . Karl is well known for his passion for photographing firm-chested young men wearing little more than a mysterious expression. So HOW ON EARTH did he cope with the prospect of 12 naked women? Oh. There we are; some of them were boys too. Hello Baptiste Giabiconi! You must be Apollo! And behold! Is that a SOLID GOLD winkle we see before us!?! What an intriguing metaphor that makes . . .
