Cast your mind back to the moment Jimmy Choo, as we know and love it under the watchful eye of Tamara Mellon OBE, became a household name as soon as the words ‘I lost my Choo!’ left Carrie Bradshaw’s mouth in an episode of Sex and The City – the TV series, remember that? That was almost 15 years ago, the year was 1996 and the Choo-mania that followed is a case-study on how to make it big, and make it as glamorous as it possibly gets! 115 stores in 32 countries, eyewear and handbag lines launched, numerous collaborations, a perfume planned for next year and something called an OBE awarded last month to the woman-behind-it-all, Tamara Mellon, are enough reasons – we think – to celebrate.
Seeing as this is a British label a 15th anniversary can only mean one thing; crystal, and in the hands of the brand’s Founder and Chief Creative Officer, an avid collector of vintage jewels, this is translated into an updated collection of the label’s signature jeweled shoes as well as a collaboration with renowned photographer and painter Marilyn Minter to create a series of striking imagery for it. ‘I have long been a collector and a fan of Marilyn’s work and know that she can capture the essence of my vision,’ says Tamara Mellon who goes on to explain what this vision means. ‘In celebrating our 15 years I wanted to create a modern glamour that stands for the style and imagination of Jimmy Choo. I was inspired by vintage jewellery to add sparkling and luminous details to iconic Jimmy Choo shapes. But these are not the jeweled shoes of the past and instead show jewels in a modern and edgy way.’ Happy Birthday, Jimmy Choo!
