Karl Lagerfeld doesn’t usually take kindly to being asked about retiring from Chanel, so we were surprised that he decided to tell French style magazine, Numero, 'I have a contract for life so it all depends on who I would like to hand it to. At the moment I’d say Haider Ackermann.'
Hmmm. Ackermann is a Colombian designer who trained in Antwerp. He is well respected within the industry, and designs for his own label, producing both menswear and womenswear. His clothes are elegant and inventive, but the label isn’t particularly mainstream or well known outside the fashion industry. His idea of a celebrity muse is Tilda Swinton, who alternates between his designs and Lanvin on the red carpet.
Bloggers and fashion writers who like to pass their time speculating on these industry moves and changes have all been nodding seriously and saying ‘yes yes, we thought it would be him’ this morning, because Karl has praised Ackermann before and invited him to a recent Chanel show. The designer himself has responded to the news by saying, 'What can one possibly say to such a phrase?! Such a compliment! Honored I feel, how can one not be?! In all honesty [I'm] tremendously, immensely touched especially coming from Monsieur Lagerfeld.” Aahh. Modest too. He’ll have to learn to make more outrageously quotable statements than that if he’s really going to fill Lagerfeld’s shoes!
