Fashion folk can be a little mean some times. Not mean like ‘Devil Wears Prada’ would have you believe, more mean in the things we don’t want to tell you. Sometimes, and we swear that it’s just sometimes, we discover a store, online shop or market that we just don’t want to tell you about. It’s our little secret, and selfishly we’ll keep it to ourselves. We did it for a little bit with Atelier Mayer, the vintage fashion online emporium, but in the end we gave up the details to you – clearly that day we were feeling generous! Now, thanks to Emma Watson wearing a Rafael Lopez dress from the site, everyone will know about it so we thought we’d remind you about exactly what it is.
Carmen Haid launched the site in 2008, reviving Atelier Mayer that was founded by her haute couture tailor grandmother, Klaudia Mayer, in 1927 in Feldkirch, Austria. Carmen revived the salon as an etailer and showroom (which is open for private appointments), to lay the foundation for a global forum of vintage fashion – it even helpfully tells you what exactly makes something vintage (that old no-name t-shirt you’ve been hanging onto, most likely isn’t). Stocking exquisite clothing from Chanel, Balenciaga, Christian Dior and Norma Kamali, as well as jewellery and objects d’art, it’s certainly worth a virtual rummage through.
‘Since we launched we have developed a following all over the globe, which is very exciting and shows that vintage is in more demand than ever,’ Carmen told Grazi Daily. ‘We regularly dress clients for the red carpet including, Rosamund Pike, Hayley Atwell and Penelope Cruz.’
