Mary-Kate and Ashley Talk About The Future Of Elizabeth and James!

As major Olsen Twin fans here at Grazia Daily HQ, we were super excited to discover that the pocket sized, shaggy haired duo have given a new interview to fashion industry bible WWD about the history behind (and future of) their labels "The Row" and "Elizabeth and James".

So where did the twins desire to have their own fashion label come from? According to WWD, during a press tour in their teens they stared into the audience and realised that the girls who stared back at them were sporting ‘oversize sweaters, big sunglasses and Balenciaga handbags’ – i.e. exactly what the twins themselves were wearing. The sight of this posse of mini-me’s was enough to spur them into designing their own high-end ranges, starting with “The Row”.

And as for the future? Let us tell you this: they have big plans. 'It would be a proper American luxury brand, made in America, with retail businesses and maybe collaborations with other brands” says Ashley. Ooooh! The latest stage in the girls’ all-encompassing expansion will be the addition next fall of handbags to "The Row", which will be followed by shoes later. >rubs hands<

Alongside “The Row” (initially established to create the perfect t-shirt), the girls have two other lines - Grazia Daily favourite “Elizabeth and James”, and tween label "Olsenboye". All the lines sprung from the girl’s love of fashion and a desire to create pieces that they would actually wear – “The Row” for instance, was founded because Ashley says 'I was a shopper. I felt that basic luxury was missing'.

Mary-Kate and Ashley continue to work hard on their various labels saying that most days, after a 9am start they have 'a financial call followed by a design meeting' and then 'meet with licensing partners, and right before the show, it’s not unusual for us to be in the office until 4 a.m.' Yep, that’s AM.

The Olsen twins are so squarely fixed as fashion industry stalwarts these days that it’s easy to forget they were once child actors. If, as is their plan, the Olsen's labels do become a ‘proper American luxury brand’ then you can expect to see Grazia Daily at the front of the queue.
