Eep! An 11-year-old Fashion Designer!

20 October 2010

Cecilia when she appeared on a US talkshow yesterday!

We know that fashion is an industry that favours the young - think 15-year-old Prada model Lindsey Wixson, and 13-year-old blogger Tavi Gevinson. But when we heard about an 11 year old FASHION DESIGNER, we have to admit we were a little alarmed.

Yep, teeny-weeny fashionista Cecilia Cassini not only knows how to make eveningwear for pre-teens, but the pint-sized American (oh yes), models her Lady Gaga-esque designs (Fur dresses! Olsens-style sunglasses! Gift bow hats! Metallic animal prints!) with a red carpet prowess, and also talks, uber-confidently, like a mini-Andre Leon Talley, US Vogue's larger-than-life Contributing Editor. Sample quote : ‘At that moment I thought "WHAAAY don’t I have a sewing MACHEEEEN? THEEEEEEEEEN, I got a sewing machine so I could zip it up and make it fit me PRAAAH-perly?"'

Apparently, Cassini's designs already have an A-list celebrity following - she's designed and made dresses for the likes of Miley Cyrus, Twilight's Ashley Greene and Big Love's Bella Thorne.

The tiny designer even has her own website, where you can buy her clothes, and her own blog  where she excitedly outlines her inspirations and poses in her own designs in every post. For example – "Chanel jewlery !!!! dreaming, dreaming, dreaming… and chunky gold is oh so in right now!!!"

Or – "and of course... FUR !!!!  back in those vintage days there was no faux fur !!!! it was real!!!"

And best of all "I love love love the colors of fall!!!! I spent some time last week in my school’s garden picking green beans, squash and eggplant!!! [aubergine] I think this sparkly purple, green and mustard plaid taffeta is the perfect start to Fall… "

It’s actually really quite good. After all, lots of little girls love dressing up. AND if you want to have your own website and apparel business, why not do it when you’re 11? After all, it's when you still have plenty of free time and aren’t yet side-tracked by thoughts of boys, partying and the ways to bunk off school.
