Last Night's Best Dressed: Cavalli's GLAM-TASTIC 40th anniversary!

Excess is Success, dahlinks! That was the message last night when Roberto Cavalli kicked-off Paris Fashion Week’s roadshow with a no expenses spared extravaganza. The Italian designer was the ultimate master of ceremonies, spending a modest $2million in celebration of his 40th anniversary in the fash biz. A tad OTT, you might say, but quite frankly, Grazia Daily wouldn’t expect anything less from the man who created his own leopard print credit card and turned a 15th century church into a Florentine nightclub... As Signor Cavalli says, ‘I never pay attention to costs – it's not attractive to speak about numbers’ >raises eyebrows<

Arriving at Les Beaux-Arts de Paris in, er, Paris, guests included Roberto’s usual bevvy of beauties, from Naomi Campbell to Heidi Klum, as well as of-the-moment starlets, including Rachel Bilson and Taylor Swift, plus a handful of our own homegrown talent, in the form of Leona Lewis and, who’s this? Craig David?! Ooh, the glamour!

So our Best Dressed display begins with our fave belles of the ball. And guess what? Despite being surrounded by A-list sparkle galore, it was Rachel Bilson and Leona Lewis who stole the show. Indeed, Rachel was the epitome of the Cavalli woman thanks to being wrapped head-to-toe in leopard print, with a splash of red courtesy of her elegant clutch. As for Leona, the songstress played up to the lavishness by sweeping about the shindig in a flamboyant mass of cascading ruffles. Aw, doesn’t she look like Cinderella racing towards her pumpkin carriage? [insert your own Prince Cavalli joke here]

Of course, if you have the pleasure of walking on Roberto’s very own catwalk, you’re guaranteed to be guest of honour at his party of the year. So it was no surprise to see Natalia Vodianova and Karolina Kurkova oozing their usual fabulousness after both models strutted their stuff for the S/S ‘11 show on Monday. While Natalia went for a froth of feathers and metallic embellishments, Karolina doused herself in saucy red pleats – and is she SHOELESS?

Next up, it’s Bar Rafaeli who was not deterred by the lesson many stars have come to learn: Victoria Beckham is a tough act to follow. Because here’s the Brazilian model wearing the very same black and gold gown VB sported FOUR YEARS before her, in 2006. Oooh, we feel a ‘who wore it best’ battle coming on... Onto Heidi Klum, we’re greeted by a shimmering delight of nude draping, topped off with a handful of feathers. Fab.U.Lous!

We dread to think what Roberto made of Leigh Lezark when she arrived in such a dark and demure ensemble. No ruffles, dahling? No animal print? No sequins?! Not even a cleavage-flash or thigh-high split in sight. Yeekz! Taylor Swift also went for a black outfit but Cavalli-ed it up with lashings of sequins and killer heels. Phewf!

And we conclude with the three noirs of the night - Eva Herzigova, Naomi Campbell and Carine Roitfeld. The trio vamped it up in their black floor-sweepers encapsulating mega-trains, cut-away details and glittery embellishments. So with today’s commencement of Paris Fashion Week, all we can do is hope that Mr Lagerfeld has something equally spectacular up his monochrome sleeve to rival Roberto’s glamathon... But will it be as bold, as brash and as blinging? We think not.
