There were parties in abundance last night so we decided to pace ourselves. Easier said than done, as we arrived at the Browns Focus and Pamela Love party to be greeted by a tray of cool tequila and pomegranate punch drinks, with crab nachos and popping candy to get us cracking (crackling?).
Mrs Burstein was looking elegant as ever wearing Lanvin and Dries with earrings by US fine jeweller extraordinaire Kimberley McDonald. Alexa Chung was there filming for her new TV show that comes out in April. She was busy circulating the room – and the racks of clothes - but we became fixated with her the patterns on her Antipodium dress, which showed Michaelangelo’s David wearing a pair of Calvin Kleins. She allowed us to take a close up but it turns out David doesn’t photograph so well in the evening light.
Over to the Vivienne Westwood/Melissa party at Selfridges Ultralounge and a fleet of dashing male models in white tuxedos were there to hand us pink champagne. The shoe exhibition featured over 200 of Westwood’s footwear fetishes since 1973, including those shoes that toppled Naomi Campbell on the catwalk. Roisin Murphy looked fresh as a daisy in Roksanda Illincic - 'I swiped it straight off the rail backstage after her show,' she told us, 'it makes a change from my uniform of fleece jumpers when I’m at home in Ireland with my daughter.' Roisin Murphy in a fleece jumper is too improbable for us to imagine. Surely it would have shoulder pads or something?
We had to stop Amber Rose to ask her why she keeps coming back for LFW. 'I just love the fashion – it’s so crazy,' she said demurely, before Ms Murphy offered up 'London suits you. It’s because you’re such a character.' It definitely takes one to know one. We had a little dance to retro-fabulous DJ Sybill’s rockabilly tracks before hopping in a cab to hit Bethnal Green for the Giles/Mac party at Bistrotheque.
The mini-burgers and hotdogs made for some welcome sustenance at Giles. The man himself was surrounded by a coterie of seamstresses from Italy who told him that he had to invite us to Castelluccio for a cappuccino and a tour of the workshop very soon. He mumbled something polite and slipped off to welcome Agyness Deyn who was freshly mohawked and dressed head-to-toe in Giles. 'It was such a great show,' she said, 'I can’t wait to get into those big fair isle knits. '
Party pal Pixie Geldof was there and we asked her where that singing voice – with new band Violet – suddenly came from. 'It didn’t come from nowhere – I’ve always loved to sing, but it’s always been my own little thing. Sometimes it’s nicer not to lay all your cards on the table.'
The party’s glamour stakes were kicked up a notch with the arrival of a troupe of Victoria’s Secret models. We spoke briefly to Alessandra “Legs” Ambrosio and Ana Beatriz Barros who were looking for a drink because they were 'totally ready to party'. Chanel Iman didn’t hang around for long – the heaving smoking area and oversized head accessories were clearly getting too much. We took our cue from her and slipped away to leave a just-getting-started dance floor and a buoyant crowd of fashion friends behind.
