Tom Ford is BACK! And he really did ban cameras!

Solange Knowles arrives at the show (see FABULOUS Tom Ford 'greeter' in the dinner suit)

Gosh. Last night New York saw the fashion comeback of a man who needs absolutely no introduction;  the very impeccable Mr Tom Ford. Although his menswear and eyewear lines are now fixtures on the fashion landscape, it was about time for his wildly anticipated return to womenswear, six whole years after leaving Gucci. In order to really build the suspense, or perhaps as a sign of his awareness of his own power and cachet, he held a SECRET presentation. Yes, you read that correctly. No photographers, apart from regular collaborator and ‘house photographer’ Terry Richardson were allowed and no images will be released until January, to coincide with the clothes hitting the shop floors.

Neither were there any bloggers or celebrities on the front row. That might be because they were all on the runway itself (the celebs, not the bloggers). In addition to supermodels Du Juan, Liu Wen, Karlie Kloss, Lakshmi Menon, Abbey Lee Kershaw, face of Tom Ford Eyewear Freja Beha Erichsen, Anja Rubik, Daria Werbowy, Karen Elson, Natalia Vodianova, Liya Kebede, Stella Tennant, Chanel Iman, Amber Valletta, Carolyn Murphy, huge new fashion crush Monika "Jac" Jagaciak, Lauren Hutton, and Joan Smalls, ALSO making an appearance were Marisa Berenson, Rita Wilson, Julianne Moore, Julia Restoin Roitfeld, Lou Doillon, Rachel Feinstein, Emmanuelle Seigner, and Beyonce "wiggling" in a "gold sequined dress". Closing the show was Daphne Guinness, of whom Ford noted: "Diamond and platinum jewelry, all her own." (Yes, we can imagine!).

This glimpse of Beyonce's hairdo is our only clue to the show . . .*sniff*

The clothes? We were forewarned that the show would not only be an intimate affair but on publicity lockdown. Apart from the photo ban, we were worried that invitees would be obliged to sign confidentiality agreements. Whether or not this was so, some commentators have tantalisingly described the clothes that we are not able to view. Cathy Horyn wrote in the New York Times that they admired “sharp pantsuits in black silk or a leopard pattern, gorgeous black evening clothes with sheer blouses, corsets and maybe a shrug in shredded tulle, impeccable details like hammered gold jewellery, stilettos with ankle ties and seamed black stockings” and that she was reassured by Ford’s “recognizably chic and womanly style”. Meanwhile, Hilary Alexander tweeted her approval, with the words

“Fabulous fun sexy glamour see-thru shirts and Beyonce wiggling in silvrr and gold and black mesh python pattern modelling at tom ford”

While another editor recalled a "silk tulle grapefruit sheer dress with velvet trim [and] ankle strap flats in sugar pink,"

Other tidbits included; Beyonce’s sister Solange being present, and "whooping" from the audience, as well as Julianne Moore’s daughter. Apparently, Tom Ford introduced each model individually by name and talked through each look. With characteristic suaveness, he twinkled at Joan Smalls in her afro ‘do with the words "And she just turned me straight . . ." before Beyonce came out, prompting him to remark "I'm definitely straight now."

How we WISH we’d been there. Quite, quite off the top of the fabulometer! Hurry up January 2011!
