There is something iconic about Antwerp bag-brand, Kipling. For those of us in school post-1987 (the year it was founded), they were with us everyday – swung over our shoulder in the morning, lugged around all day as we went from class to class, and thrown in the corner when we got home in time for Neighbours. They gave us a sense of authority, for we knew that only the cool kids had Kipling bags, complete with the signature monkey of course. But now they’ve just got cooler – thanks to a rather brilliant collaboration with hot London label, Peter Pilotto. The fit couldn’t be better – bright abstract prints on Kipling’s backpacks, bumbags and satchels – and let’s not forget that half of Peter Pilotto, Christopher De Vos, is part Belgium.
‘It just seeming the perfect collaboration,’ Peter told Grazia Daily when we caught up with him at the launch of the collection. ‘We obviously knew Kipling before as all the cool kids had their bags at school [told you so!], but when we met Isabelle [Cheron, Creative Director], we all clicked immediately and knew that it was meant to be!’ Indeed, in the four years since Isabelle joined Kipling, she has breathed new life into the brand, and it was her idea to collaborate with Peter Pilotto. ‘I have always loved their collections. I thought that their clever prints would be perfect on our bags, and they are!’
The boys designed two prints, but it is the cosmic option that’s sending us all galactic, and the backpack is already flying our of store! ‘The galaxy print was based on the idea of travel and exploring,’ Peter says. ‘An otherworldly traveller if you like.’ Much like the travelling author Rudyard Kipling, after whom the company is named (we guess the design boys did their background research!). The capsule collection of 11 bags, five accessories and naturally the famous monkey, launched exclusively this week in a pop-up store in Selfridges and will be available across the country on the 17th (just in time for a sneaky London Fashion Week purchase)!
