You’ve got to hand it to Gemma Arterton. When Grazia Daily arrived at the premiere of ‘Tamara Drew’ (a right jolly romp of a film) in Leicester Square last night, we were expecting to see the star going all out glamazon for her moment in the spotlight. Instead, we were happily surprised to see Gemma turning to this season's minimalist trend to make an impact. And boy, what an impact it was!
Letting her killer cheekbones and fine features do the talking, the starlet’s barely-there make-up and understated pony perfectly amplify that fresh face of hers. Plus, despite the London drizzle, Gemma looked ravishing in a white jersey floor-sweeper from Gucci’s Cruise 2011 collection, accessoried with a natural straw clutch to fit the film’s country setting. It’s a simple yet super-slinky approach if ever we saw one. And what with the minimalist movement sweeping from the catwalk’s tailoring to the red carpet’s eveningwear, we can declare that less is officially more.
So the low-key look has us Grazia girls wondering whether Gemma intentionally made the most of her girl-next-door appeal in order to play down the Hollywood bombshell stereotype? After all, it was only a few months ago that the actress complained, ‘if you are a successful woman, and beautiful, in Britain, you are disliked.’ So it's a wise move, right?
One thing's for sure, our Gemma’s on the right track. In fact, this is the second time this year that she’s worn one of Frida Giannini’s designs for a UK premiere – remember when she worked a geometric shift dress from the S/S ‘10 collection (above)? Albeit more 'ferosh' than last night's number, her no-fuss look signalled a move towards minimalism, especially when compared with her red carpet moment back in 2008 when she wore a, er, rather daring Balmain number. Here's a reminder of the dress in question:
Crikey! This makes Gemma’s refreshing, bridal-like turn yesterday all the more triumphant, dunnit? It was this legsy legs-a-thon which first made Grazia sit up and take notice, and back then, 76% of you voted La Arterton as “just another Brit to get it wrong on the red carpet.” Yikes! (there’s no denying it, dear readers – click here for the proof).
So hasn’t our girl come on leaps and bounds, eh? We say a big fat YES! Do you?
