You know those photo albums that your mum insists on unveiling each and every time your gorgeous new boyfriend returns to the ‘family home’ with you? Yeah, the ones with your under 18 (and slight bleary-eyed) disco snaps and post GCSE’s blow-out holiday to Newquay. The ones where you went from chav to grunger in a fickle slick of eyeliner. The very pictures that prove you didn’t know how to walk in heels or dress your newly found curves…. Or learn to wax your legs. No one needs to see those on a regular basis and here at Grazia we often enjoy pretending that we entered this world instantly on the hunt for a sumptuous woven leather Bottega bag and clad head to baby tiddly toes in Balenciaga (oh, if only Balenciaga did babywear!) Wait, why were we talking about this again? Yes, ahh, one of the greatest picture we’ve ever discovered… now this makes us feel heaps better about our previously not-so-fashionable-lives.
Please witness Alexa Chung; photographed in June 2006 (a mere four years ago) doing cheesy promo shots for a TV programme called ‘Shoot Me’. We imagine, in the same way that it would do for us, the phrase ‘shoot me’ would too flash through her mind if mumsy-dearest got this snapshot out in front of her beau Alex-Artic-Monkeys. Cripes.
An off-the-shoulder sweatshirt in baby pink (with either outside-of-London-town ‘Orpington’ or ‘Orthopedics’ inscribed on the sleeve) and a tulle dancer’s skirt complete Miss Chung’s ‘06 look. And we don’t even want to talk about her hair.
We’re not being nasty, we think this picture should actually fill every girl with hope. And that's a nice thing. A hope that one day we’ll all be transformed from fashion zero to fashion hero. If Alexa can now repeatedly pip stylish celebs to the post for every ‘best dressed’ list on the planet and become the UK’s biggest style icon since Kate Moss, then there’s still a glimmering chance that we’ll all make it through - one day. Faux pas firmly in the past, thank you Alexa for this special moment. And thank you for making your hair shorter… and bouncier…
UPDATE: Alexa has just tweeted that this picture is in fact from 2002 - "Does that make it any better?"
