It is an extremely serious UN war crimes tribunal. Former Liberian ruler Charles Taylor stands accused of giving guns to rebels in neighboring Sierra Leone in exchange for uncut diamonds during that country's civil war. But that hasn't stopped witness Naomi Campbell appearing in court today looking anything less than catwalk-ready....
Taking to the witness stand at the courthouse in the Netherlands an hour ago, the supermodel looked like she'd just stepped out of the latest Prada ad campaign in a very-Mad Men foxy cream knit dress and cardigan from Azzedine Alaia’s spring/summer collection, and a totally A/W '10 beehive hair-do.
Despite trying to avoid testifying at the trial, Campbell was eventually forced to appear after being subpoenaed.
In court, Campbell corroborated the testimony of actress Mia Farrow who claimed Taylor had given the model an uncut 'blood' diamond after meeting her at a dinner party hosted by Nelson Mandela in South Africa. The supermodel admitted she handed the jewels to a colleague, telling him to "do something good with them," such as donate them to charity; adding that the colleague "still has them, so they didn't benefit."
Campbell is notorious for not letting up in the style stakes regardless of the occasion. In 2007, when she was sentenced to 200 hours community service (for throwing a mobile phone at her assistant), she treated the short walk from her chauffeur-driven limo into the detention centre each day as a fashion show; appearing in a series of catwalk-savvy outfits accessorised with the latest sunglasses and It bags. She finally waltzed out on her last day in a silver sequinned Dolce & Gabbana corset gown, killer heels and diamonds.
