After much ado-ing and speculation all last week, Chelsea Clinton delighted America with its own ‘Royal Wedding’ at the weekend, marrying fiancé Marc Mezvinsky in an inter-faith ceremony wearing Vera Wang. The ivory strapless gown featured a draped bodice in silk tulle with a raw edged laser-cut swirling silk organza ball skirt and train. The word ‘exquisite’ has been in circulation very much this weekend. Ooh! and the groom wore top to toe Burberry.
Chelsea opted for an old-fashioned extra long Vera Wang tulle veil and complemented her fairytale gown with a simple bouquet of white hydrangeas. Vera Wang seems to be a hugely popular choice for discerning brides these days. She manages to combine very traditional shapes with modern flourishes. The crystal and pearl embroidery on Chelsea’s waistband was much remarked on.
For the reception, she changed into a Vera Wang silk tulle Grecian gown with a crisscross back and a narrow black grosgrain belt, while the bridesmaids reported for duty in Vera Wang lavender chiffon strapless bias cut gowns with a side drape and contrasting plum bows.
The designer herself released the following statement: "It was an honor and a privilege to dress Chelsea on her wedding day. I have watched her grow into a beautiful, grounded and caring young woman. She radiated joy, youth and happiness. I wish Chelsea and Marc a long, happy and healthy life together."
Ahhh! Bring out the hankies. On the other side of the Atlantic, Alicia Keys married her rap producer boyfriend of 2 years Swizz Beatz in a ceremony in Corsica in France. She wore . . . Vera Wang too! Alicia is pregnant and the newlyweds are expecting the new arrival in November. Congratulations girls!
