Spotted: Blake Lively and Leighton Meester trotting about the streets of NYC kitted out in a torrent of covetable clobber. So prepare yourselves, Upper East Siders, because in honour of our favourite Gossip Girls, we divert from our usual assortment of A-list Best Dressers to focus your envious eyes on their latest fash-a-thon. Look on in adoration...
Our first treat is the perfect embodiment of the Serena v Blair dichotomy. While Miss Golden Girl looks boho-ish in this batwing Diane von Furstenberg silk dress, Queen B keeps it preppy and prissy in a sophisticated Gucci shift of subtle leopard print. And once again GG costume designer extraordinaire, Eric Daman, shows off his acute attention to detail – S’s bright snakeskin bag and bold jewels are the ideal clash against B’s classic black heels and satchel. Could there be a better way of social butterflying than with a full-on fash-off? We think not.
For Round 2, our heroines go matchy-matchy, summer-appropriate and rain-proof all in one go. How masterful! This is a perfect lesson for those of us enduring this questionable British ‘summer’ and as you see, it's an easy enough formula. So according to these two, all you'll need is a sleeveless blouse tucked into a patterned flippy skirt accessorised with strappy heels, a tote on the elbow, and a transparent umbrella (natch). But somehow, we have an inkling we’ll end up more drowned rat than Park Avenue Princess. Darn it.
Some may say this next ensemble, involving a masculine striped shirt over Daisy Dukes and wellies, is not enough glam and too Glasto for the typically Herve Leger-enrobbed Van Der Woodsen, especially with the addition of a knotted scarf more suited to Chuck Bass. Us? We approve of the mixing-it-up approach so will let her off (or maybe it’s those leggy legs blinding us again). Meanwhile, Blair - she of the pearls and Alice bands - is looking less up tight in this floaty floral frock, but stays true to her pretty little roots and steers clear of Serena-territory with a bejewelled choker and dainty shoes. Cute!
For the final piece of evidence in today’s illustration of Eric Daman’s genius, we return to the girls' Parisian frolics. It’s no secret Blair can always be counted on for drama, drama, drama and this vermillion organza gown provides just that (plus some serious lusting on our part). According to on-set sources, it’s from Oscar de la Renta’s Pre-Fall 2010 collection (there’s no such thing as recessions in GG land), worn with a purple Roger Vivier clutch. Looking this fabulous, is it any wonder Ms Waldorf is the fashion darling of NY society? But wait, are those...FLIP FLOPS?! Quelle horreur! We’ll pretend we didn’t see that bit.
