Stella McCartney with Team GB Olympic medallists Victoria Pendleton and Allyson Felix
Congratulations Stella McCartney! The vegetarian designer has been named today as the Creative Director of the British Olympic team, by Adidas. Hurrah!
Stella will be Creative Director on the full athletic kit for 2010 (for all Olympic and Paralympic sports). She is also designing the exclusive Team GB lifestyle range for sports fans to buy, which will be available from the autumn. This includes menswear – Stella’s first foray into men’s sportswear.
It’s the first time in the history of the Summer Games that a top designer will work with a leading sports brand to design competition wear for the national teams.
Wowsers! With Adidas and Stella this could be the chic-est international sporting event ever! Stella is a natural choice for the job, seeing as her flair for sporty detailing and items like fashion jogging bottoms and silky parkas earned her a regular gig producing ranges for Adidas, which are always a highlight (and often look too good to save for the gym!)
It's the first time that anyone has been named for this role, as team GB has had their kits provided by Adidas since 1984. Stella herself was thrilled – calling it "an amazing, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity".
Nick Craggs, Adidas's marketing director, said "We are thrilled to have someone of Stella's stature working with us in the run-up to London 2012,"
Olympic officals also joined in celebrating the news, "We know that how an athlete looks and feels in their kit gives them a psychological advantage when competing, and we are delighted that Adidas has brought Stella on board," said Andy Hunt, chief executive officer of the British Olympic Association.
No sketches or samples have been shown to the public yet, so keep checkin’ up on Grazia Daily for the latest news as we get it.
Despite the fact the news is unexpected; we think it is a match made in heaven! The Olympics is nothing if not a chance to boast about
