OOH! Who's That Girl?

13 July 2010

Those of you who have already grabbed the latest issue of Grazia (out today!) will no doubt have been intrigued by the opening photo on this week's You, The Fashion Jury feature. Because there, resplendent in an awesome tie dye maxi dress, just-so trilby, Wang shoulder bag (low slung) and black DMs, is one 'Jessica Hart'. When the photos came into the office last week, there was universal adoration (as you can see from the pic, above, that woeful combination of clothing somehow WORKS), but of course then we were also asking "who's that girl?"

A quick wiki-search reveals "Jessica Hart is an Australian model who appeared in the 2009 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue". Not surprisingly, we wondered if she'd walked any catwalks yet, but a quick call to her London model agency Select confirmed that she hasn't, (although she has been shot for the cover Australian Vogue, H&M, and Aussie swimwear label Seafolly, and had a brief cameo on The City last year - no, us neither). We're not quite sure how Hart has slipped through the high fashion net, this season of all seasons, and we suspect this won't be the case for much longer..

Anyway, in the meantime, before Hart reaches modelling mega-stardom, let's enjoy her off-duty fashion sense, which seems to swing between grungey (hi-tops and maxis - with obligatory sexy-nerd glasses), and girly (very Aussie fresh-as-a-daisy prints). Another surprise - Hart is a dedicated and entertaining blogger (documenting her modelly lifestyle - all music fests and "here's me eating a huge slice of pizza"). Back home, Hart even has her own clothing range, Neon Hart (geddit), which launched in Australia earlier this year, with a percentage of the range's profits donated to children’s charity Destiny Rescue (how cool is that?). The pics we've seen on the label's Facebook fan page (yes we have spent the morning cyber-stalking her), look pretty cool - pvc jeans, sharp shouldered jackets, leather drapey waistcoats, vintage band T shirts - but so far they're all only available in Oz.

It's not often a style icon drops fully-formed into our laps, but that seems to be the case here. So we're formally declaring that Jessica Hart is One To Watch, and you can be sure we will be doing just that, right here on Grazia Daily...
