Best Dressed – Beat the heat, celeb style!

How hot was your weekend? Was it so hot that you couldn’t wear any actual clothes and spent your time in only a swimming costume and a layer of SPF? Was it so hot that the shops ran out of lollies and Cornettos? Was it so hot that you couldn’t venture onto public transport but had to settle for activities exclusively within walking distance?

If the answer was ‘yes’ to any of these questions then maybe you need a lesson in summer elegance from our celebrity friends. They seemed to have avoided the perils of wilting in the heatwave with either  calf or knee length styles.

Wearing midi length (HOT for A/W ’10!) We have SJP modelling a Stella McCartney frock with a certain degree of success. What’s your take on the issue? Do you love the floaty flounces or is Sarah Jessica’s teeny frame looking swamped by excess material? Showcasing a floor-sweeping look is Alexa Chung. She looks gorgeous AND laid back all at once, don’t you think? And dare we say it, we might even attempt to copy this look ourselves!  (we can’t often say this of Alexa’s style, not when she seems to keep dipping her hand into the slashed leather shorts jar, but this time. .)

Fashion’s favourite pantomime wicked stepmother, Rachel Zoe looks relaxed and far from a sweaty Betty in her grey jersey ensemble. We’ve stroked our chins over this one, and we’ve decided: WE LIKE! (especially the gold and cork wedges). And to our final calf-length dresser – it’s the omnipresent Victoria Beckham. Like Alexa, Veebie proves that black can be cool in the sunshine, with mannish trousers rolled up to half-mast, the obligatory skyscraping towerblock shoes and glasses bigger than her face. Lush.

Other ladies had more formal duties to attend to. Step forward Marion Cotillard at the Paris premiere of Inception. This stiff-looking concoction with the floral lace overlay seems a lot fussier than her usual French elegance, what does it remind you of ? Meanwhile at the other end of the scale, Miss Chloe Sevigny stepped off the plane at LAX wearing THIS bizarre hybrid of shirt top half and  . . .  err . . . doll’s pinafore bottom. Simply add lace up boots and big black socks and your ready to  . . .we don’t know. Go hiking, perhaps?

One of our favourite actresses ever, Julianne Moore may have been trapped under sweltering studio lights but remained fresh in her Richard Nicoll silk jumpsuit. Mmmm. Where can we order one of these, please?

And now for two ladies we can only ever sigh wistfully at, knowing that our dress sense is unbearably dull compared to their fashwan nous. Selma Blair combines hard-edged peeptoes with this minimal vest dress (we ADORE the unbalanced hem giving a flash more knee at the front) with a Chanel handbag, naturellement. Eva Mendes is trippin’ around town in another of her effortlessly perfect sundresses, chunky rope soles and jumbo sunnies combinations. She doesn’t even look like she tried!

Oh well, if we needed cheering up while thinking about our own tan lines and dress envy, there’s always ice cream....
