Crystal Renn for Fashion for Passion
What IS happening to Crystal Renn? Today we spotted some new images of the plus-size-supermodel looking distinctly un-plus-sized. Looking, in fact, CONSIDERABLY smaller than plus-sized. In the new photographs, taken by Nicholas Routzen, Renn wears a Fashion for Passion vest (in support of the photographer’s campaign for children and the arts) and though she looks undeniably smokin’, Crystal looks like a shadow of the voluptuous beauty who released her memoir ‘Hungry’ last autumn.

Renn has been very vocal in her support of un-skinny minnies and has become something of a figurehead for average sized women who want to see themselves represented on the catwalks. As such, this isn't the first time Renn’s weight loss has been commented on - in May she modelled at the Chanel cruise show looking slimmed down, which resulted in feverish (and panicky) speculation about her shrinking frame. Her agent Gary Dakin followed up that speculation by saying “she is not trying to lose weight at all”, though he did concede that Renn had been so busy her weight may well have dropped slightly. “She fluctuates between a 10 and a 14”, he added, also saying that “She went hiking in Patagonia for three weeks over the holidays and she firmed up and got a little smaller.”
So far, so normal (save for the Patagonian hiking) but these new images show Renn looking even slimmer than she was in May, though her agent has reiterated the statement he released then, saying over the weekend "she is still a 39-40 hip (she fluctuates like any woman), and a solid size 10. She has no urge [to lose weight]”. But he then goes on to say, rather bizarrely "she's an amazing model. She can make herself look bigger or smaller depending on what the client wants” which is a statement we are impressed and confused by in equal measures. Can she REALLY? Because if that’s the case, then she has a physical structure unlike any other model (or, in fact, any human being) we’ve come across.

So whilst it could simply be that Renn is magically making herself look smaller in these new images; or it could be styling, lighting or even (whisper it) airbrushing that have resulted in her looking so different; there’s no doubt that she does look significantly smaller than she did a few months ago. And when a model like Renn, who has been a vocal critic of fashion’s partiality for super-skinny models loses weight, does she undermine her criticism of the industry or is she as entitled as any of us to lose and put on a few pounds? And - dare we ask - could losing weight damage or boost Crystal’s career?
So is it right for us to be outraged when a plus-sized model loses weight? Did you like Renn the way she was, or do you think she looks great either way? Please speak your mind in the space below.
