At a party last night in Kensington Palace’s Orangery, Range Rover celebrated its 40th Birthday by launching a new ‘Evoque’ edition and announcing the appointment of the brand’s new Creative Design Executive. But who have they chosen? Master of streamlined minimalism Philippe Starck? Or organic design powerhouse Marc Newson? No, silly, it’s Victoria Beckham!
Beckham’s appointment is a pretty solid indication of how seriously she is being taken as a designer after cracking the fashion market only four seasons ago. She said of her new role "I am incredibly excited to be collaborating with Range Rover. I like to take on a challenge and I'm ready for it" whilst Range Rover design director Gerry McGovern added, "Victoria understands luxury products" (you’re kidding, Gerry!) He went on to say that "she is a Range Rover fan and has been a Range Rover owner for many years."
Mrs. Beckham’s first challenge will be to design the interior of the superfancy ’Evoque’, a smaller and greener Range Rover that has been designed to attract younger drivers to the iconic British brand and will be on the market in 2011.
We imagine Beckham’s interiors will be an exercise in the restrained, luxurious glamour that has become her signature style and which she gave us all a master class in last night, with her outfit of nude drape-shouldered dress (from her own AW’10 collection, naturellement) and vertigo inducing Brian Atwood ‘Drama’ pumps from his AW’10 line.
But what would you like to see coming to the inside of Range Rovers now that VB is at the helm? Monogrammed seats? A special compartment for perilously high heels? Or perhaps an in-built sat-nav narrated by David? Express yourself using the space below please...
