Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis is one of the most enduring style icons of the twentieth century. Her ladylike wardrobe, consisted of simple shapes – shifts, A-line maxis, neat skirt suits, in a very-Sixties palette of feminine pinks and peaches all topped off with those signature oh-so proper accessories – hats, gloves, snap-shut handbags, and pearls, plus pre-Wintour giant sunglasses.
So imagine our shock, when two months ago it was announced that the sleek sophisticate was to be played by none other than tomboy scruff-bag Katie Holmes. We really couldn’t picture Mrs Cruise’s transformation from jeans Queen into the ultimate First Lady.
Well, from today, we no longer have to, because the first photograph from the set (of the History Channel’s tv mini-series, The Kennedys) has appeared, with Katie looking quite astonishingly like Jackie in a sky blue shift dress and pearls, and that trademark Bouvier bouffant bob.
As you can imagine, many chocolate-eyed actresses have taken the role of Jackie over the years…from Brit brunette Joanne Whalley in the 2000 tv show Jackie Bouvier Kennedy Onassis to Sarah ‘Buffy’ Michelle Gellar playing ‘Teenage Jacqueline Bouvier’ in the 1991 series A Woman Named Jackie; and brilliantly, Charlie’s Angel Jaclyn Smith in the 1981 TV show, Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy.
But our favourite Jackie of recent years was Jeanne Tripplehorn, who recently put in a faultless portrayal of Mrs O in last year’s remake of cult fashion documentary Grey Gardens, about Jackie’s eccentric reclusive relatives Big Edie and Little Edie. The actress wore a chocolate brown corduroy jacket, big tortoiseshell shades and a headscarf to portray the president’s wife, a look that’s totally in tune with the A/W’10 Equestrian trend.
Meanwhile Holmes already has hot competition. Rachel Weisz has also been signed to play Jackie O in an upcoming film to be directed by her husband, Darren Aronofsky. Style-watchers are, naturally, already salivating about the forthcoming wardrobe wars, but Weisz has been quick to dispel any rumours of rivalry, saying of Holmes "She's a fantastic actress. She will be fabulous." And judging by today’s photographs, she could just be right.
What do you think of Katie’s Jackie O look?
