We've just heard the sad news that Bollywood actress and model Viveka Babajee, 37, was found dead last week after reportedly hanging herself. This is the latest in a host of models to have allegedly committed or attempted suicide in the past year, including Daul Kim, Noemi Lenoir and most recently, male model Tom Dicon.
The Indian star was a former Miss Mauritius beauty queen, one-time face of Coca-Cola and Kama Sutra ads in India.
US feminist blog Jezebel has been closely following this story, with one article from model-turned-journalist Jenna Sauers speaking out. She says it's important to recognize the "extremely high-pressure environment" that models exist in. “When you’re successful, you’re sort of surrounded by people who have a financial interest in your career, who want you to be working hard all the time,” she says, noting that agents “may not necessarily look very kindly on the notion of taking time off, even to deal with an obvious mental health problem.”
Very sad news indeed.
