We have been banging on about the importance of cruise collections for years now. Cruise (or Pre if you like) are the collections that fall mid season, so before SS and AW. And while you may take a cynics view and think that they are just money making schemes, they’re becoming as important as the main fashion weeks. They even demand fashion shows now, which means they need audiences. And while it’s one thing for Chanel to fly their audience to St Tropez for a three day jaunt, it’s quite another to add a whole new ‘fashion week’ to the yearly schedule…seriously two a year is quite enough. The reason we whinge is because yesterday Yves Saint Laurent held a show for their Pre SS ’11 collection in Paris, and where YSL go others are sure to follow. The thing is we actually wished we had been there, especially now we’ve seen the collection.
It’s much more commercial and less austere than what we’ve come to expect from Stefano Pilati of late, and would be ideal to wear right now rather than wait till January or February to buy it. Denim short jumpsuits, pretty silk printed dresses, blouson shorts, high-waisted trousers and bra tops (yes, this looks chic and totally wearable – who knew), and colour blocking combos all felt modern, cool and totally right for now while being respectful of the YSL legacy. Bravo Stefano and save us the black and white print jumpsuit please!
