Yes it was two days ago and yes you may have heard all about it, but it’s taken us some time to recover from the glorious wonder that is the Maison Martin Margiela exhibition at Somerset House (and no it’s not because we were just really, really busy yesterday and it slipped off our to-do list). At Wednesday’s launch party for the ‘20’ exhibition, we joined Daphne Guinness who was locked in talks with Gareth Pugh for most of the evening, Sir Paul Smith, Erdem, Nicky Haslam, Bella Freud and Lulu Kennedy, as they gathered in the sunshine to celebrate 20 years of the work of the iconic Maison Martin Margiela. You can get up close to pieces from cult collections, stand (or indeed sit) and watch mesmerising video footage that reminds you, if you need it, of the designer’s brilliance. Organised by themes you walk through ‘shoulders’, ‘silhouettes’, ‘trompe l’oeil’ and the ‘Artisanal’ collections.

The space at Somerset House is ideal for such an exhibition as it feels like you are encouraged to ‘discover’ the designer and his work in various rooms. ‘I feel like I’m in church!’ Sarah Mower told us, as she drifted through the House in a daze of admiration. But of course the main buzz of the night was the question whether the man himself had come to admire his back catalogue. Famously anonymous, was that Mr Margiela drinking the Beefeater cocktails? Or was that him helping himself to a bit of parmesan? Perhaps that was him smoking on his own as the sun went down on the terrace? Or perhaps he was at home watching reruns of Friends. Regardless, this is a man who needs to be celebrated.
