We heart Cavalli’s Cannes Yacht

18 May 2010

This afternoon Grazia Daily brings you conclusive proof of what you knew all along: celebrities are not like us. Whilst we spent the weekend with a bottle of Chablis and Andrew Lloyd Webber (seriously, how good is Over The Rainbow?), Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony were living it up on Roberto Cavalli’s yacht at the Cannes film festival.

Signor Cavalli’s yacht is something of a Cannes staple, and if you were expecting subtle whitewashed decks and vintage style, then think again. Though frankly, why would you be when the boat in question is owned by a man who once said “anyone is capable of doing minimalism. I won't, because it's horrible." The Cavalli yacht is the biggest, flashest and most colourful yacht in the marina. In fact, it may be the biggest, flashest most colourful yacht in the entire world. And we totally, unashamedly love it.

Asked by Martha Stewart in an interview last Christmas “how big is it?” (she was talking about the boat) Roberto replied “not so much…. 140 feet”. (Actually, it’s 134 ft, but what’s six feet between friends – see below for an amateur video that shows just how huge that really is). He continued: “many people ask me ‘which colour is your boat? Honestly, I don’t know because it depends on what time – in the morning it’s a dark blue…. And sometimes it’s even gold.” says the designer, referring to the fact that the boat has been boldly finished in a specially-commissioned iridescent paint.

The celebrity guests on board the good ship Cavalli are no less flash-tastic than the yacht itself and naturally, Roberto’s guests are all invited to wear his own label (well, it would be kiiinda disrespectful to turn up in Dolce & Gabbana, non?) this is obviously a great coup for Roberto and is an utterly perfect way to showcase his collections considering how appropriate Cavalli’s designs have always been for lounging around oozing fabulousness.

This year, J. Lo and Marc have been spotted aboard together with their adorable twins Max and Emme. Jennifer has been snapped going for a contemporary take on nautical chic in a floral-printed chiffon peasant top and skinny black jeans, with beaded sandals and a belted cream trench for the chilly sea breeze.

Last year saw Eva Herzigova receive Cavalli’s famous hospitality, looking totally showstopping in full-on Hitchcock heroine mode, sporting an appropriately Grace Kelly style embroidered white dress and a Cavalli-tastic, super-sexy black leopard-print number.

In 2007, the designer played host to Mischa Barton and Sharon Stone and the trio monkied around on deck, playing on one of those bonkers two-wheeled scooter things that never really took off. Mischa also chilled out reading Jordan: Pushed To The Limit, and smoking what the Daily Mail called a “distinctively shaped home made roll-up” >raises eyebrows<.

Cavalli is well known for throwing the most impossibly fabulous Cannes parties on the yacht, too. Mariah Carey attended last year in a cut-away printed maxi dress, while P. Diddy made like Bond the previous year in a classic white tuxedo along with Sharon Stone and Mary J Blige, who almost out-diva’d Mi-Mi in a floor-length zebra print dress.

Alas, Grazia Daily suspects that the likelihood of our getting an invitation for next year is slim – in 2008 the magnificently forthright Roberto said that when he sees some people in his designs “you just want to say, 'Give it back’”, which is a sentiment we suspect applies to us - but if you’re reading, Mr. Cavalli, we would promise to be on our best behaviour...
