Don't hate us girls! We just met Gossip Girl Stylist Eric Daman!

27 April 2010

Are you a short skirt and low cut Serena kind of girl? Or do you fancy yourself as more of a bohemian Vanessa type? Maybe you’ll rock out like Jenny or go preppy and prissy like Blair. From all of those names you must’ve guessed by now that we’re talking about Gossip Girl – the big GG. And if you’re a fan of the fashion on the show (which, duh, of course you are) then you’re probably aware of the genius stylist behind the knee socks and flippy frocks – Eric Daman. But if you don’t have time to pop across the pond and hail a taxi to the Upper East Side to pick up prom dresses and tartan kilts to create the look, then you’ll be delighted to know that the clever folk at Miss Selfridge have teamed up with Team GG to create an exclusive capsule collection of dresses, two for each of the main girls – that you can buy online RIGHT NOW! They’ll be instore on 30th April too. We’ll be racing you for the full length leopard print dress (that’s Vanessa’s) and for Blair's pink mini dress - sooo perf for this weather. Naturally, we took this opportunity to grill Eric on all things Gossip related. You know we love you (both Eric & Graziadaily's gorgeous followers!) XOXO.

Blair 2 in 1 floral dress £45
Blair pink babydoll dress £45

Graziadaily: Preppy-chic, hair-bands, knee socks and cool American designers have made Gossip Girl a real trend influencer - when did you first realise that Gossip Girl had this power?
Eric Daman: It really hit me, in I think July 2008, when the New York Times did a cover story on the power and influence the Gossip Girl “look" and that it was having not only on the fashion world but all media outlets too.

Jenny pink lace tutu dress £49
Jenny black and silver dress £45

GD: When you first started working on Gossip Girl, for your research into dressing the girls, did you visit the right area of New York and track the real life GG girls down?

Eric: Yes, I actually hung out around the exclusive prep schools on the upper east side to "research" and analyse the girls look and how they would trick out their uniforms to give them personality.  Tory Burch flats, Balenciaga bags, Wolford stockings - it was fascinating and really helped me define how I wanted to approach the school uniforms

Serena black bodycon dress £49
Serena embellished waist trim dress £39

GD: Who are your favourite top secret American brands that us Brits don’t know about but you’ll be snapping up for the new episodes?

Eric: You may already know some or most… but keep your eyes out for Christian Cota, Carlos Miele, Yigal Azrouel, and from your side of the pond you’ll see Preen and Erdem.

GD: If you could sum up each girl, Vanessa, Serena, Blair and Jenny in one item of clothing – what would it be?

Vanessa leopard maxi dress £59
Vanessa coin trim neck detail dress £39

Vanessa: embellished, bright coloured ethnic print top
Serena; slinky, plunging, body con dress
Blair: sexy sheer bow blouse
Jenny: black mini motorcycle jacket

GD: Do the girls start to mix their own style with their character’s style when they step off set?

Eric: They definitely take a bit with them, some more them others. Serena and Blake have a very symbiotic relationship but Leighton and Blair couldn't be more different.

Prices start at £39, at Miss Selfridge
