You can always count on Marina, of Marina and the Diamonds fame, to add a touch of the surreal to her personal style. While we don’t always fully embrace her teddy bear cardigans or hippo dresses, it’s great to see a young celeb having fun with her wardrobe and supporting young design talent. But today as she arrived at the Maida Vale studios for a Radio 1 performance, we must admit that we adore her dress choice. The yellow and green dress – which, incidentally, is ideal for the gorgeous weather we are having in London today – is by St Martins MA graduate Laura Mackness. We loved her collection when we saw it on the catwalk at CSM last February, and as much as we hate to say, we told you so, it looks like we were spot on. Inspired by the work of Francois and Jean Robert, Jean Paul Goude, Grace Jones and basic shapes like squares, circles and triangles, Laura adds a sense of wit to her designs. While the dress that Marina has chosen is quite tame, save for the black hand on the belt, she could have opted for Laura’s eyelash collars or trompe l’oeil tunics. While the award-winning designer’s profile has been under the radar since the show, it looks like it’s time for her to step out of the shadows, as fashion is crying out for a cool bit of humour.
