Last night’s Best Dressed: Operatic!

13 April 2010

Holy moly! What a feast for the eyes it was last night. The stars rolled out to celebrate the New York premiere of Rossini’s Armida at The Metropolitan Opera House and since our Best Dressed eye has been deprived of the sight of some glam glad rags, we are very happy with these little beauties. But what we really want to know is whether YOU are? So without further ado, let’s dive in...

Remember the time when we were too timid to don a jumpsuit? Luckily those days are behind us and all-in-ones have subverted expectations of what eveningwear should be - here’s why:

Chloe SevignyChloe Sevigny

Always one to make a statement, Chloe Sevigny looked super sleek in an ultra long, wide-leg romper, proving that this is the best garment for a touch of chic with a dose of edgy. See, pretty though they are, having your pins on show isn’t the only way to get noticed, Miss Sev.

Ginnifer Goodwin

Although not a jumpsuit, Ginnifer Goodwin’s ensemble played on the same theme thanks to her high-waisted trousers, structured bustier and chunky gold jewels. The only rule? Do like these ladies and keep the rest of the look fuss free – all that’s needed is one simple yet interesting twist: see Ginnifer’s subtle colour pop courtesy of her contrasting strappy sandals plus matching clutch (plus hawt boyfriend Joey Kern on her arm). Or how about Chloe’s unconventional gloves which bring an elegant touch to take the outfit from day to a night fit for the Opera. Thank you girls, consider the lesson learnt.

Next up, we have a dress that dreams are made of. Classic beauty floated into the Opera House in the form of Camilla Belle who was wrapped in lady-like tiers of delicate chiffon, topped off by a sultry embroidered bodice and accented by an oversized velvet bow. Sophisticated, romantic, luxuriant AND by Yves Saint Laurent – what’s not to like?

Well doesn’t Maggie look terrific! Striking a pose in the evening sun, our favourite Gyllenhaal also pioneered the full-on flowing look by opting for an effortlessly elegant floor-skimmer. The nude hue is ideal for the summer months and Mags avoids looking washed out thanks to a bold slick of lippy, perfectly co-ordinated with blood red heels. And since the event was sponsored by YSL, the classic Tribute heels are the perfect homage to the French fashion house. Bravos all round!
