DOLCE AND GABBANA SHOW FOR AUTUMN / WINTER 2010
This year marks 25 years of the brand Dolce and Gabbana – the ultra successful partnership of Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana. Usually a very forward-looking pair, the anniversary has given the boys a chance to do a spot of reminiscing;
"Our first show?" Signor Dolce recalls, “We did it in a small apartment in Milan. We organised it ourselves, me and Stefano, without PR, with nothing. My sister and brother were on the door."

Things are different now, as their business empire employs 3,700 people. As well as the main fashion line, there is the second line, the smash hit D&G collection, plus accessories collections, beachwear, eyewear, childrenswear, underwear, watches, fragrance, cosmetics... and so on.

Over the years they’ve re-invented and re-imagined their best selling formula – womanly lingerie looks, brilliant tailoring (Dolce is father was son a Sicilian tailor) and always with a huge dose of a particularly Mediterranean glamour. The formula we all know as ‘Molto sexy’. Here’s what the boys say of the influence of their home island;
Domenico Dolce: "When I arrived in Milan in 1978, I was so tired of Sicily. I had lived there all my life and the only thing I wanted was to breathe different air, otherwise I would have stayed there."
Stefano Gabbana: "I, on the other hand, was in love with it – as I am today. So I insisted on Sicily and we built our entire aesthetic around it, an aesthetic made up of contrasts, masculine and feminine, and of strong passions."

They are celebrated for their catwalk shows, the event of which are the highlight of Milan fashion week for the editors, because they always have the best staging, most fabulous girls, and most of all, the most dramatic finales.
This year, they had the front row in tears as they showed a film championing the artisans of Italy’s fashion industry to conclude a collection of their ‘greatest hits’

The boys are nothing if not social beings, and the models and celebs that fall in love with their clothes – Naomi and Giselle are great pals of the designers, as are the Hollywood ladies to have starred in the D&G campaigns - Scarlett Johansson, face of the label's first make-up campaign, as well as by Monica Bellucci, Isabella Rossellini and Katy Perry. Madonna has collaborated for years with the duo on her stage-wear, has most recently teamed up with the brand on a range of sunglasses.

And the secret to their super sexy success? "When we design a dress, we try to imagine whether a man will whistle at the women who buys it when she wears it," says Gabbana. "If he will, it's OK."
Congratulations chaps! Here’s to 25 more years!
