Karen Elson: From catwalk to sound stage

Hang on a second here. Someone needs to have a word with whoever it is whose responsible for dishing out looks, brains and talent. They seem to have been awfully generous with Karen Elson. Gorgeous supermodel (obv), part-time actress, and now respected singer and songwriter. What is that about? Karen is to release her first album, 'The Ghost Who Walks’, on May 25th and has posted a video of her performing an acoustic version of ‘Stolen Roses’ on her website. Apparently all the songs were written after her 2005 relocation from New York to Nashville, and although this isn’t her first foray into music (she was founding member of cabaret group ‘The Citizens Band’), this album is all her own work. It’s reported that she wrote ‘in the sanctuary of a closet in her bedroom’ - which is obviously much bigger than our closet - and took months before building the courage to let her husband (and music supremo) Jack White listen to them. He loved it and produced the album and played drums (handy). While the influence of PJ Harvey is clear on the haunting tracks, this is a very individual sound. So what’s next Karen? Internationally renowned artist? Booker prize winner? Nobel Peace Prize? Go on, I’m sure you can turn your pretty little hands to just about anything. Sickening.
