The weekend’s Best Dressed: Metallic Meltdown

01 March 2010

Check out the stars who were going for gold this weekend...

Falling back on the tried-and-true designs of Dior, Marion Cotillard was parading on the red carpet once again for the Cesar Film Awards (the French Oscars, or so we’ve heard). We’re sure you’ll agree she looks positively resplendent in this luxe lamé look, complete with sheer bodice to reveal a sexy bustier. Although in the past, we’ve berated Marion for sticking to full-length frocks from the same SS10 collection, she’s clearly a fan of the moto if it ain’t broke, don't fix it - and who are we to argue when she looks this swell? (We are still thankful that a new collection will be showcased in Paris next week for her to play with though...) But it wasn’t just La Cotillard who caught our eye in a glitzy number. Step forward up-and-coming sartorial maverick, Zoe Saldana. The Avatar actress brought a flash of metallic to the MaxMara FROW in Milan thanks to the highly mirrored sheen on her gold shift, and she was a glowing delight because of it. Good move.

Ah yes, leave it to Lady Gaga to take metallic to the max. Totally togged out in sequins, she carted her tea cup about the streets of London in a dress of gold threads created by Brit knitwear extraordinaire, Craig Lawrence. If only we lived in La Ga Land and could pull off such a razzle dazzle masterpiece.. *sigh* But back to Milano, we spotted Lindsay Lohan doing what she does best — polishing up for a party in a glittering metallic mini. Now, as much as appreciate that Lilo hasn’t got her knickers on show (this time), the similar bronze tassles on her dress create a more Showgirls effect, non? Man-eaters everywhere, take note...

So having cottoned on to the idea that mirror-like materials are the best way to ensure the limelight stays on you, Linds hopped over to the Roberto Cavalli catwalk show kitted out in a space-age asymmetric frock of platinum. Here’s one girl who doesn’t do things by halves. Because, still incorporating the trend into her daytime wardrobe, the very shimmery one woman wagon arrived at the Cavalli after-party in a pair of slouchy yet sharp harem trousers. It’s all getting a bit Star Trek covered in tin foil, don’t you think?

But wait, there’s more! Crossing over to the more understated-chic side of metallica, we have Mrs Depp (hurrah!). There’s no question that we were simply hypnotised by the Paradis when she joined fellow Frenchy Marion at the Cesar Film Awards dressed in this subtly shimmering, copper-tinged gold number. The neckline that swoops down to hug her waist is just splendid and are those little pockets we spy? Yep, it’s official – glittering gold is still the new neutral. And finally, it’s over to the ever-cutesy Zooey Deschanel with very pretty hair who was doing her thang at the Cinematographers Outstanding Achievement Awards in LA last night. We love how she’s kept the futuristic silver of her dress uber-feminine with the prom-style silhouette and that trademark oversized bow. Shiny, happy people, we salute you.
