Last night’s best dressed: maxi-nificent!

25 February 2010

Summer = drinking a pitcher of Pimms down the pub wearing a flowing maxi dress, right? So what to do when there’s not a spot of sunshine in sight to accessorize the long-length look with? Never fear because once again we have the answer! After spotting no less than three of our fave fashion-forward faces working marvellous dark maxis when out and about yesterday, Team Grazia will be going to great lengths (guffaw) to follow their lead by donning a more winter appropriate version while we wait for warmer temps. Because you know what they say - three’s a trend and if they’re good enough for them, then they’re good enough for us...

It's no secret that here at Grazia, we’re besotted with Nicole Richie and her penchant for boho maxi dresses. But this slinky satin number she opted for when presenting her fashion line in France last night brings an sleek gal-about-town twist to her usual look. It screams subtle sexiness without coming over too try-hard and the lacey neckline provides a hint of bra-flashing in a saucy negligee stylee. Underwear-as-outwear, eat your heart out! Nic didn't leave all traces of bohemia behind though - check out her Wang-inspired loose plait and smokey, smudey eyes. Too cool.

But we’re not just talking evening attire because the maxi dress is one versatile garment that with go with your black basic staples. Kate Moss teamed hers with a leather satchel, lace up boots, oversized sunnies and her lived-in tux jacket when hopping about London yesterday afternoon. She’s been looking seriously sexy in an array of minis recently so what a treat to see her mixing it up with a maxi. Effortless, understated, yet still chic - what more could you want? Ok yeah, Mossy’s killer legs would be pretty helpful too...

However, little Lily Allen proves that you don't have to have a model figure to match – in fact, the monochromatic look is the perfect figure flatterer. When attending the James Small AW10 catwalk show, the pocket princess rocked this simple ankle-grazer - you can’t go wrong with such a classic. The key is the fluid shape - no accessories, fussy frills, or apparently make-up, needed.

So although we’re counting down the days for when the sun starts shining and we’ll be getting into the summer spirit with a multi-coloured floor-sweeper, until then it’s all about minimal effort but maximum effect. We think we’ve proved our point, so get investing now!
