Stars wear skull scarves as a mark of respect

During his life it was a best seller – an item that women everywhere wore to buy into the McQueen magic – even if they couldn’t afford his mainline.

The fab skull print scarves have been spotted on the likes of Madonna, Naomi Campbell (who appeared at the store wearing the lip print version) Sienna and Nicole Richie over the past year or two.

Stockists of Alexander McQueen have all experienced a big jump in sales, with sites such as Net-a-porter selling out of many items. Liberty are creating a huge window display in tribute to the late designer and Barney’s in New York also reported a run on skull scarves.

When Isabella Blow died three years ago, her memorial service was a huge gathering of be-hatted fashionistas paying tribute to her by adopting her trademark accessory.

Celebrities and fashion fans feeling the urge to commemorate his passing by wearing McQueen all seem to have had the same idea. Grazia's resident Style Hunter, Hannah Almassi who is out on the streets of London today called the website to tell us 'Everyone in Selfridges is buying McQueen!'

McQueen's own boutiques meanwhile, are closed for business today. The Bond St branch has removed the window displays and hung black curtains in their place.
