Carey Mulligan: Miuccia’s new muse?

10 February 2010

When we spotted Carey Mulligan rocking another pretty Prada piece on Saturday night, we couldn’t help but wonder whether the British ingénue is fast becoming Miuccia’s muse. Because, in case you haven’t noticed, Carey’s worn an abundance of designs from the Italian fashion house recently and her commitment is pretty impressive considering the most in-demand designers must be itching to dress the Oscar nominee.

From the Toronto Film Festival last Autumn to her most recent outing this weekend, it’s clear to see that Carey’s rapid red carpet evolution from a relative unknown to ‘the new Audrey Hepburn’ with an interesting, intellectual charm is partly thanks to the power of the Prada dress. And this is one mutually beneficial relationship if ever there was one – Carey’s newbie status needs the backing of a super-brand to give her cool cred while she’s helping to breathe young life into the legendary fashion house. So could this be the best fashwan pairing since Pammy’s Westwood love-in and will it blossom to trump big-hitters like VB for Marc Jacobs? Let’s start from the beginning and examine the evidence…

In September 2009, a little known actress came out of the woodwork thanks to her mesmerising turn as a 1960’s teen in Brit flick An Education. But it wasn’t just her acting abilities which received rave reviews. Walking the red plank in Toronto, Carey looked demure in a strapless A/W ’09 Prada dress accented with an oversized bow-detail and a pair of blood red heels. Next up, for her October appearance on 'The Late Show with David Letterman', the star was back to black in a chic Prada cocktail dress. It was at this point that she revealed ‘Prada and Miu Miu are some of my favourite [designers], that’s what I like to wear for events.’ And so the match-made-in-heaven began.

Miuccia described her A/W ‘09 collection as ‘about a need for feminine empowerment’ so a hot gladiatorial number was the perfect choice for Carey to make an impact at the New York premiere. She looked quirky cool while retaining Prada’s subtle chic thanks to this leather armour-esque dress with fierce metal adornments. How great to see her rocking such a unique style, giving us the hope that there’d be more edgy choices to come. Indeed, she later said of the daring look, “I love to try mad things... It was cool, like I was going into battle.” And what a victorious result (chortle!).

In November, Carey stepped out in Prada’s new S/S '10 collection and got all glitzy glam. We’re loving that (once again) the actress went the slightly experimental route with this dress that's beautifully adorned with transparent embellishments. And so her status as a fashion muse on the rise was sealed...

Looking as cute-as-pie, Carey went back to the simplicity of Prada’s black shift, this time from the Resort 2010 collection. Major kudos for veering towards the minimal with her no-fuss, tomboy-chic that we've grown to adore. The taupe Marni clutch is the only addition needed to keep it ever-so-elegant.

Complementing her new rich hair colour, Carey chose this girly pink dress with a kitsch photographic-print for the Santa Barbara Film Festival on Saturday. Another creation direct from the S/S ‘10 collection, the style was specially modified from the catwalk version to suit the starlet’s demure sensibility. So by this point, Carey’s quite simply knocked our socks off! And as such, a star is born. With a little help from Prada.

Now, all this talk of a preference for Prada reminds us of a certain Ms Wintour. Could she have something to do with the blossoming alliance between Hollywood newcomer + mega designer? For one, the Vogue Editrix has previously admitted something of a girl crush on Carey, saying ‘this girl is going to be a big star’, and it’s no secret that she’s long had an affinity with Miuccia’s designs (The Devil Wears Prada, anyone?). Plus we all know that La Wintour is the power player in fashwan land so can command anything she deems fit. Yes, we all wish she was our match-making friend, too >sigh<

Whatever her secret, there's no doubt that Carey has charmed the fashion forces. So surely it’s just a matter of time before we’re drooling over her gamine features in Prada’s next ad campaign, no? And is this a hint of what's to come on Oscar night? You can trust Grazia Daily will keep you posted!
