Last Night’s Best Dressed: fashwan fest PLUS Cheryl and Dannii’s fash-off!

After being spoilt with a sparkling red carpet awash with colour-popping gowns this weekend, we think the celebs who attended yesterday’s CFDA party can be forgiven for their less-than vibrant attire. In celebration of new Fashion Week director Stephanie Winston Wolkoff (try saying that after a few cocktails), the fancy New York soirée saw the fashwan elite out in force, including Anna Wintour and Diane von Furstenberg, who was dressed in head-to-toe black. Grazia fave Olivia Palermo arrived kitted out in a snug ensemble consisting of her lived-in leather leggings under a funky body warmer complete with polo neck and contrasting belt, finished off with a pair of YSL Trib Two pumps for a dash of her ladylike charm. Designer Rachel Roy also opted for black and grey with her striped tee tucked into high-waisted leather shorts that aren’t the most flattering pair we’ve seen... And although we’re loving the oversized jacket that matches the shorts’ high hemline, those ribbed tights turn the look from Alexa-Chung-cool to school-girl-drab. Must try harder.

So Hollywood may have the glitzy Golden Globes but over on this side of the pond, there’s the ever-so-glamourous National Television Awards, giving the best of Blighty’s TV crowd a chance to get out their glad rags. Last night’s event saw The X Factor triumph as Most Popular Talent Show and this can only mean one thing: another round of the fashion war that kept the nation so intrigued for much of ‘09. Ding Ding! We were delighted to see Cheryl Cole and Dannii Minogue head to head once again, this time in a red carpet fash-off. So let's assess...

After rocking two marvellous frocks by Stéphane Rolland on the X Factor, our Chez returned to the designer’s oeuvre with this glorious dove grey gown from his A/W ‘09 Couture collection. Modified from the catwalk version to show off her arms, the dress perfectly showcases Cheryl’s curves, exagerrated by the embellished waist detail, and those matching wrist cuffs are a unique touch. UPDATE: we admit that it took a while, but it's just dawned on us that Tara Palmer Tomkinson wore the very same frock back in October, although with a more risqué result. It looks like another battle is on...

Making her first public appearance since announcing she’s pregnant, Dannii expertly hid her growing baby bump with horizontal stripes and a full-skirt. She accented the monochrome of her pretty vintage prom dress with a pair of red heels and that adorable shag-like bob. We reckon she looks as sweet as a humbug. But who do you think has the, ehem, X Factor? Let us know below!
