Golden Globes countdown: dress predictions!

Brilliant, it's award time again! The nominees are in, the goodie bag delights have been revealed and the A-listers are busy preparing their acceptance speeches for this Sunday’s Golden Globe Awards, but our eyes will be on one thing only: the ladies’ red-carpet frocks! But who’ll wear what? And, more importantly, will the chosen gowns be Golden Globe-worthy? So just in case the stars are still umming and ahhing over which show-stopper to pull out of the bag (cripes, ladies, it's getting a bit late now), we’ve rounded up some suggestions to help them along. Let the countdown begin!

Penélope Cruz can always be counted on for a dash of old-school glamour and since she's been dressed by everyone from Armani Privé to Chanel on her recent promotional tour (it's a tough life, hey?), we're pretty sure she'll be working a big name on the red carpet. So we reckon Pen, who’s nominated for the best supporting actress award for her role in Nine, would look divine in this sultry Jean Paul Gaultier gown complete with sparkling sequins and curve-hugging draping. And considering it’s from JPG’s couture collection inspired by the charming wardrobes of Hollywood heroines, what could be more fitting?

Every big red carpet event needs a goth-glam moment and, this year, we’re relying on Carey Mulligan, who’s up for best actress. The actress-du-jour has recently fallen into a LBD rut but this floor-sweeping frock by Rodarte would pull her straight out with a bang. Her edgy attitude would fit perfectly with the grungy gown and there’s no doubt she has the pizzazz to pull off the warrior vibe. We promise to forgive her if she decides against the tattoos though...

All eyes will be on Marion Cotillard this Sunday, but not only because she’s been nominated for the best actress award – her gown is also sure to be a show-stealer. After having a browse through her recent red carpet wardrobe, we’re thinking feminine elegance will be the order of the day and seeing as she’s currently the face of Christian Dior, our bets are on this little beauty straight from the S/S '10 catwalk.

Zoe Saldana has been on quite the fashwan rampage of late, promoting alien blockbuster Avatar, so there’s sure to be several designers champing at the bit to dress her. She rocked an out-of-this-world Roland Mouret gown for the London premiere, so continuing along the supernatural vibe, we think this sparkling reptile-esque Giorgio Armani number from the A/W '09 couture catwalk would be just the ticket. One thing’s for sure, Zoe won’t be short of choice.

It’s no secret that Grazia Daily has long been fans of Diane Kruger’s red carpet style, so we’re keeping all fingers/toes/eyes crossed that the actress will rock up to the awards in support of her latest flick, Inglourious Basterds, which has been nominated for best film. Given the fact that Di considers Mr Lagerfeld as a father, we’d love to see her continuing her obsession with all things Chanel with this dramatic piece from the latest couture collection. Surely someone's got to do it this awards season. Please!

Best actress nominee Emily Blunt is an English rose if ever there was one, and her penchant for ladylike looks makes us think she’ll be opting for a girlie gown on the big night. And what could be more feminine than this embellished beauty from Valentino’s S/S '10 collection? We LOVE it.

Don’t forget to check back here on Monday morning to get the full lowdown and see if we're on the money!
