There's nothing quite like the first star-studded awards event of the season to kick-start the New Year and last night's People's Choice Awards didn't disappoint, partly due to yet another cringe-worthy speech from Mariah Carey when she stumbled to the stage to accept her trophy for Favorite R&B Singer. Our favourite lovely-but-loopy lady barely made it up the steps due to her stumble-inducing mermaid gown that she was dangerously close to spilling out of, but luckily hubby Nick Cannon was at hand to bring his misses to the podium where she proceeded to wobble and ramble for a full seven minutes about how grateful she was, making an extra special thanks to Nick for his support and 'other things I probably shouldn’t mention.' Oh err. Don't believe us? Watch the video below for a dose of craaaazy. Looks like someone was getting a little merry on the champers, eh MiMi?
But forget the crazy on-stage dramas because the red carpet was awash with a mix of dazzling dresses from ultra-feminine cocktail frocks to super-sexy minis that got us all excited this morning. Here are our best-dressed contenders – bring in the verdict below...
We hope you’ll forgive us when we admit that Sandra Bullock isn’t often on Grazia’s fashion radar. Yes she makes us smile as the ultimate charming romcom queen and we were pretty jealous when she flashed some seriously toned flesh AND got to smooch Ryan Reynolds in The Proposal but hands up if you remember that recent red carpet Sandy appearance when she picked a rather, let's say, complicated Lanvin dress which consisted of multi-coloured panels and a rather questionable pleated red sash, all topped off with a fuzzy hair do and ankle boots. So although we admired her bravery at the time, we’re happy (and very relieved) to see that last night she chose this beautiful brocade Vivienne Westwood gown paired with taupe Brian Atwood heels. The shaping and draping really does the trick and that golden hue is the perfect contrast to those super-sleek locks – she looked so fabulous in fact that she managed to steal the show from a certain Ms Carey (well, almost).
Diane, Diane, Diane, how we love thee and your never-ending fashwan genius! Just check out this little beauty that Ms Kruger rocked to bring some serious sexiness to the soirée. Her form-fitting minidress embellished with metallic threading and accordion pleats for added texture is by Hervé Léger but in true budget savvy style, the actress accessorised her designer frock with jewels from H&M! A perfect endorsement of recessionista ways if ever there was one, and just when we thought we couldn’t love her any more...
Also going for winter white was Olivia Wilde who is rapidly becoming our guilty pleasure after her recent round of beyond elegant numbers. This organza Monique Lhuillier A/W '09 dress is ever-so-ladylike – we’re loving the elegant one-shouldered detailing and voluminous chiffon skirt enhanced by a black ribbon belt. An understated clutch and those infamous slingback peep-toe Sergio Rossi platforms are the final touch. Wispy and wonderful! We can’t wait to see what Olivia has lined up for her next show-stopping entrance.
After the recent roller coaster of highs and lows for Christian Lacroix, it’s great to see a sassy A-lister such as Ginnifer Goodwin rocking one of his S/S '09 creations at such a high profile event. The always adorable actress chose to champion the designer with this navy and white striped dress enlivened with an oversized corsage at the shoulder which she teamed with a satin woven Sergio Rossi clutch and black satin pumps. She looks sweet enough to eat.
Yowza! Hello yummy mummy! Jessica Alba rocked the red carpet in this sassy Antonio Berardi S/S '10 frock with a peplum at the waist to emphasise her killer curves, proving that Jess is well and truly back to her best. The neckline is fun and flirty, the silver and green brocade are divine and those Burberry Prorsum sandals are to die for. We want!
