Style Crush: Shingai Shoniwa

29 December 2009

If there’s one girl who fearlessly walks out looking like an absolute fashion powerhouse each and every time we see her it’s… Shingai Shoniwa. You thought we were going to say Rihanna, didn’t you? Shingai, the lead singer of The Noisettes, may not change 20 times a day, be stalked by paparazzi 24/7 or pick up all of the latest Wang must-haves like RiRi - but throughout 2009 she’s wowed us on the red carpet and at gigs and parties too. Why? Well, first off, that hair. She’s always perfectly coiffed with some sort of up ‘do/Mohawk/Mohican/afro affair that bobs around in harmony with her bass lines. Secondly, we’ve never seen her in anything boring and dreary (denim not welcome), instead, Shinghai’s colour wheel is whirling in orange, purple, cobalt and fuchsia pink! No wonder she counts Jimi Hendrix, Kate Bush, Josephine Baker and Grace Jones as her style influences. Whether onstage or off, Shingai’s love for all things eye catching (and very 80s) means she more often than not we’ll spot her in a crazily cut mini dress with supersize shoulders or a retro glitzy all-in-one sound about right – and always flashing plenty of leg. So if you think that’d be enough to make a statement, think again, because the songstress isn’t afraid to pile on the accessories either. In the past year she’s garnered even more fashion cred by wearing hot new designers like David Koma and Jean Pierre Braganza as well as performing at PPQ’s afterparty for their AW09 collection. So far, so totally cool. We can’t wait to see Shingai’s 2010 wardrobe! Here’s our favourite irreverent and fun looks of hers from ’09, just in time to motivate us to do something an inch braver for that New Years Eve party…
