The weekend’s best dressed: the long and short of it

Full length and fabulous

While we were glued to our sofas watching the X Factor final last night, the glam glitteratti were out in force for the Grey Goose Winter Ball at the Grosvenor House Hotel, and it seems that a floor-sweeping gown was the best way to go if you were lucky enough to be on the guest list. The A-List attendees went to great lengths (get it?) to impress Elton John who hosted the spectacular £350 a ticket fundraiser in aid of the superstar’s AIDS Foundation. Among the guests was Kelly Rowland who stole the spotlight when she serenaded the star-studded crowd and glided amongst the guests wearing a beautiful blue Basil Soda Couture mermaid dress with an extravagant embellishment on the hip to accentuate her curves. Lily Allen also joined in the celebrations and proudly posed beside her specially-designed cocktail bar, "Lil' Box of Tracks", which was auctioned off for a whooping £100,000. Her monochromatic maxi provided the ultimate figure-flattering look and with that plunging neckline and dramatic eye makeup, Lily knows how to make an impact.

But never one to be outdone in the glam stakes, Elizabeth Hurley stuck to what she does best in a trademark split-to-the-thigh gown. We’re loving the juxtaposition of the lilac chiffon dress and her white fur gillet which she wore to maintain some subtle sexiness while staying true to the festive theme. And finally we have Amber Le Bon who broke the floor-skimming trend but glistened none the less in her silver cocktail dress with structured shoulders teamed with a matching metallic clutch. And when said frock is personally designed by master of the sexy silhouette, Roland Mouret, who can blame her?

But although winter has well and truly arrived, the mini is still making its mark on the celebrity consciousness. Whether wrapping up against the New York chill in a pair of tights under her colourful skirt like Alexa Chung or working a high hemlined frock a la Leighton Meester in the warmer climates of Florida, there was a lot of leg on show this weekend. Once again we’re giving Alexa top marks for bringing a youthful flare to the Louis Vuitton celebration courtesy of her electric blue printed LV skirt tempered by a buttoned up jacket while our favourite Gossip Girl got into the festive spirit by putting in a performance at the Jingle Ball wearing a sexy strapless mini dress complete with pleats and ruched detailing for added interest. We’re not so convinced by the panda-inspired make-up though Leighton, and don’t even get us started on those booties... As for Anne Hathaway, what a treat to see her pins on show when she walked the red carpet over in Los Angeles dressed in this one-shouldered dress also adorned with button detailing. It's no doubt that she's a cutie, we just wish the young star took a few more red carpet risks sometimes.
