Victoria Beckham

Gosh, Victoria Beckham is a busy bee at the moment. The Spice Girl/footballer’s wife/mother/fashionista/designer has had her fair share of ups and downs over the years, but has always come out the other side fighting.

With an A-list fan base and recognition from major fashion bigwigs, including friend Marc Jacobs and mentor Roland Mouret, she is now in her fourth season as a dress designer. And tomorrow she will debut her new eyewear and denim lines under her in-house ‘Victoria Beckham’ name (the DVb label is no more) at select stores including Net-A-Porter, for whom she has created two short films to show on their site this week to celebrate the launch. Plus she has re-designed her website and is set to appear as a judge on American Idol next month. Phew. And the designer, whose collections have predicted sales estimates of $7.5million (about £4.6 million) for next year, has absolutely no plans to slow down.

'I plan on still being here in 25 to 30 years’ time,' she says. 'It’s about doing things gradually and building the brand in a strategic way. It’s about finding the right time, the right team. With everything that I do, I will only do it after I’ve done all my homework. I really am a perfectionist, and I don’t want to rush anything. It’s not just about putting my name on a product and getting it out there. That’s not what is important to me.
'At the start, it was tough because people had preconceptions, but I worked incredibly hard and kept my head down. After three successful collections – though I’ve got a long, long way to go and a lot of work to do, and I will always feel that I have to prove myself, always – people say, "Who is my competition?" I’m my competition. I want to do better next season than I did this season. And I’m sure the season after that I will want to beat myself again,' she said. 'There have been people who have wanted to knock me that haven’t been able to because they haven’t been able to argue with the quality or the sell-throughs.'

Jim Gold, CEO and president of Bergdorf Goodman, where Mrs Beckham will make a cameo during February’s New York Fashion Week, credits her success to talent as well as her style queen status. 'Victoria Beckham is one of the great style icons of today, and a supremely talented designer. I have great certainty that her new sunglass and denim collections will be extremely well-received. As we have seen with her couture dress collection, the moment she wears a product of her own design, it becomes immediately coveted by others.'

There’s no arguing with that - everyone from Elle Macpherson to erm, Carol Vorderman has been spotted in VB’s designs. And with such a strong work ethic and endless pots of ambition, it’s pretty apparent we won’t see Victoria disappearing any time soon.

'I can cope with mistakes, if they are mistakes I make myself,' she says on moving her design empire more under her control (the jeans were previously produced under a licence). A smart move, we reckon, that has left the fashion world at her feet. We can’t wait to see what’s next, and in the meantime we’ll settle for seeing what happens when she and Simon Cowell are put on a judging panel together. She’s previously said, 'Simon has a very tongue-in-cheek, British sense of humour, which I have, too. I’m looking forward to a bit of banter. I hope he does give me a little bit of a hard time. I love that. I feed off of that.' Ooh we can just smell the Cheryl-esque flirty banter and sexual tension already…[WWD]
