Hippy chic

Devon AokiElle MacphersonPenelope Cruz

When a total of three fashion-forward stars wear flares in one weekend, it’s safe to say that the trend is officially back. We’ve fallen in love with Devon Aoki’s oh-so-Chloé high-waisted pair which she complemented with a clincher of a belt, 70s-inspired graphic-print top and wedge sandals. Retro chic eat your heart out! Another model paying hippy homage, courtesy of her bell-bottoms and beaded necklace, was none other than Elle Macpherson at Timbaland's release party in Florida. She played with the proportion of her outfit by layering a tunic-length shirt and cropped cardigan over her silver lace trousers and with those fluorescent toenails peeping out from a pair of flip-flops, the supermodel keeps it modern. The final celeb to cement the return of the trend was Penélope Cruz, with a blast from the past. Fresh from a glamorous turn on Leicester Square’s red carpet, the actress opted for a soft pastel palette with the fluid fabric of her satin flares flowing over a pair of platforms. Although she’s looking uber-comfy in this Travolta-esque get up, we reckon she looks ready for bed rather than a night out on the tiles...

Red alert

Carey MulliganEva GreenDita Von Teese

The British Independent Film Awards this weekend saw the best of British dressed up in their finest gowns, but a special nod must go to Carey Mulligan who was the epitome of the English rose in her romantic number. Carey, who won the Best Actress award, looked adorable in the Bottega Veneta Spring 2010 frock with quirky pockets, funky stamp Sergio Rossi gladiator sandals and matching origami clutch. Meanwhile Eva went all grown-up in a floor-sweeping Alexander McQueen gown with a super-sexy cowl neck. The feather print provides a dramatic edge but the clinging fit meant Eva shuffled rather than sauntered down the red carpet... Over in Florida, the ever-adored Dita Von Teese made the most of her signature red lipstick by wearing a figure-hugging dress and matching peep-toe heels. Considering she usually sticks to classic Dior gowns, it’s a real treat to see her wearing the same playful tiger design as worn by Daisy Lowe last week, and since the fun creation is by the father of Dita’s boyfriend, eccentric designer Jean-Charles de Castelbajac, we think it’s the perfect fit for the feisty burlesque star.

Jump into winter

Rosamund PikeRose Byrne

Rosamund Pike well and truly won us over during her turn as a ditzy blonde alongside Carey Mulligan in An Education, but it was the actress’s navy jumpsuit that really caught our eye at the BIFAs on Sunday night. Proving her fashion credentials once again, Rosamund took her all-in-one from frumpy to fabulous thanks to a floral jacket, patent Sergio Rossi courts and matching satin clutch. While the Brit opted for an ultra long wide-leg and loose fit, Rose Byrne was in New York City working a harem-style jumpsuit compete with spaghetti straps and a contrasting ruched bodice – a simple belt was the only accessory needed to define the high waist. So it’s time to reconsider your anti-romper stance because we say leaping into a jumpsuit is the easy-peasiest way to do winter chic...
