If you can name-drop ‘Gucci’ in your new fashion line, you’ve pretty much got a sure fire recipe for success. But that’s something two Gucci brothers are in no hurry to do as they launch a new Spring handbag line. Alessandro and Guccio Gucci, great-grandsons of Guccio Gucci who founded the iconic fashion house in 1921, want to make their own mark with their collection instead of riding on the obvious coat tails right in front of them.
"We are not doing this because our name is Gucci, nor do we want to try and replicate what the Gucci brand is doing," said Guccio. "We have our own vision."
While Alessandro focuses more on the marketing side of things, Guccio is the design force behind the new To Be G line and is no stranger to the world of stylish leather goods. He worked for Gucci for twelve years and helped his father Giorgio with his GiorgioG handbag range, as well as running one of
To Be G has a classic, European feel about it, with a lily pattern print as a signature motif. Crocheted with interwoven leather strips, printed with different colours, or laser-cut – the lily is reinterpreted in various ways to create different looks for the bags. Guccio has also created a set of small and structured crocodile ‘grandmother bags’ as well as Spanish matador-inspired embroidered ones. From the (albeit little) we’ve seen and heard, this range will be completely gorgeous and we love the continental idea of it. Although, no matter how hard the brothers try to steer clear of the G word, with such a strong fashion heritage no-one will expect anything less than fabulous surely. No pressure then… [WWD]
