Valentino film makes Oscars shortlist!

20 November 2009

We’re in serious count down mode for next year’s Oscars. Who’ll win (and more controversially, who won’t…), whose speech will we be laughing/crying/cringing at, and of course who will be wearing what on that spectacular red carpet.

And now we have our fashion fingers crossed for one award nominee in particular. Valentino: The Last Emperor, the documentary about Italian fashion legend Valentino Garavani and his partner Giancarlo Giammetti, has been shortlisted for the Best Documentary Oscar and is now the only fashion film in the category. Beating off stiff competition in the form of The September Issue (seriously, can we just have Grace nominated for a cool award or something pleeeease?), the film is now one of fifteen documentaries in the running for the gong.

Directed by Matt Tyrnauer and released in March, The Last Emperor takes a behind-the-scenes look at the fashion house, the final two years of Garavani and Giammetti’s time at Valentino, and the professional as well as personal relationship between the two men. Valentino, who is known for his flamboyance and expensive living, has spent time promoting the film with Tyrnauer, including holding a lavish party last night with a star-studded guest list including Naomi Campbell, Alessandro Dell'Acqua, Brian Atwood, Margherita Missoni, and Allegra Beck. Let’s hope it’ll all be worth it. We’ll all be rooting for you come Oscar night, gentlemen! [FWDaily]
