So, US website The Daily Beast has revealed its top ten list of the world’s 'most valuable' models. Based on four key criteria including multi-year contracts, ad campaigns, runway appearances and magazine covers, here’s the countdown from the bottom up. 10: Carolyn Murphy, 9: Miranda Kerr, 8: Natalia Vodianova, 7: Christy Turlington, 6: Alessandro Ambrosio, 5: Daria Werbowy, 4: Doutzen Kroes, 3: Adriana Lima, 2: Kate Moss, 1: Gisele Bundchen.
Grazia’s verdict? A good mix of stellar talent including Victoria's Secret veterans like Adriana Lima and Doutzen Kroes, catwalk and campaign fodder such as Daria Werbowy and Natalia Vodianova, newbies like Miranda Kerr and oldies (in model terms that is) like Turlington and Moss you could argue that it’s a versatile bunch. But look a bit harder and there’s something strikingly similar about all of these girls. With the exception of maybe Kate Moss, they’re all rocking what’s known in industry terms as the ‘universal look’. Er, what? Mousy brown, long hair that’s neither too-straight, nor too-curly, small and even features, medium skin tone and bodies that are just-curvy-enough – meaning women want to look like them and men want to erm ---- them.
Queen of ‘la universal’, Gisele, even made it to the top spot bump-in-tow and without so much as putting a foot on the catwalk in years. But apparently, when you look that good, the occasional pap shot is enough to maintain interest. You go girl!
So what does all this tell us? If we hit the gym, take up spray tanning and dye our hair ‘blondette’ we might just get that pay rise afterall… Heck, it’s worth a shot.
